After I got them to explain the location of the phone clone and the real access code, I went straight to their workshop. Yellow tape spanned the doorway, and a notice was pinned to the door. The werewolves still had the place sealed as evidence of a crime.

I had to get that phone. I knew I should call Rend and tell him what I knew. But I was afraid that after what Bertulf said, Rend wouldn’t discuss the case with me. He had to focus on his position in the pack leadership right now, especially when Bertulf was gunning to take him down. I settled on sending Rend a text, letting him know I had some info about the case. When he didn’t respond in fifteen seconds, I let myself in through the doors, ducking the yellow caution tape.

Yes, I was impatient, but the girls were truly suffering inside the jail.

Nonfat milk.

Insufficient amounts of teriyaki sauce.

Room temperature food.

It was a travesty.

Inside the workshop, I was on my guard. The girls had all sorts of crazy contraptions and only a fool would go in unprepared.

They said it was on the top shelf of the bookcase that was propped up on one side with a folded up newspaper. Their shop was a mess, disorganized chaos that only their genius minds could sift through and interpret. Imagine the most cluttered and messy garage you’ve ever seen, then multiplied by ten.

The bare floor was covered with sawdust and metal filings. The workbenches crowded with tools and parts and gadgets in various states of disassembly. Shelves and chests of drawers lined the walls, but most of the drawers were opened because cords or handles were sticking out, preventing the drawer from closing all the way.

I found a bookcase with a newspaper underneath the left side to keep it level. But the top shelf just had loose screws, a hammer head that had come free of the wooden shaft, a jar of electrical fuses, a pair pliers, a receipt for pvc piping dated seventeen months ago and a greasy rag. I searched and searched, but it wasn’t up there. I checked the other shelves too, but no phone clone.

It was gone. Did the werewolves find it during their search? Great. My only chance to learn what was on Pippa’s phone, to find out who was involved in the potions black-market with her.

There was a key sitting on the shelf too, so I picked it up to take a look. Maybe the phone was hidden somewhere under lock and key. But the second I took the key in my fingertips, I heard a click. The amulet on my chest grew icy cold. Something told me to duck.

I flattened myself to the floor like a pancake and just in time. A paintball was launched from the other side of the room and went splat against the shelf where I’d been standing a mere second before.

Great. This place was booby-trapped too.

I rolled over on my back and then sat up.
